Help wanted. Amazon announced a new delivery program in the US that would allow small business owners to set up independently owned fleets of delivery trucks to deliver Amazon products. The new partners will not be Amazon employees but will be trained by the online giant, have access to its logistics technology and given discounts on vehicles and insurance. The program will be in direct competition to companies such as FedEx, UPS and the US Postal Service. Hours later, Amazon also said it was purchasing PillPack, an online startup that provides prescription medication to consumers.


Coming soon. At a preview in Berlin of its third Bread&&Butter B2C festival to be held in August, online giant Zalando said it will launch (paywall) a new year-round shopping site, breadandbutter.com, that will focus on streetwear and feature exclusive product. The site, which will debut (paywall; in German) to coincide to with the start of the show on August 31, is described as a "destination for style and culture."


Strengthened swoosh. Nike's just released Q4 results are significant as they showed sales growth in the athletic giant's home (and biggest) market, North America, for the first time in a year. The positive numbers, which beat analysts' expectations, showed North American sales were up 2.76 percent and that overall sales rose 13 percent to $9.8 billion. Nike said that digital innovation and new product launches helped drive the growth.


Hyping hemp. The US Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill on Thursday to legalize growing, processing and selling industrial hemp as a cash crop. Cultivating the plant, which is a close relative to cannabis and is widely used in textile production, has been illegal in the US since 1937. The measure still needs to be approved by the House and the President but it has broad bipartisan support.


Driverless delivery. The USA's largest supermarket chain, Kroger, is launching a pilot program with Nuro, a two-year-old startup, to have groceries delivered in the latter's driverless vehicles. The program will launch this fall in a yet to be announced city and start with human "safety drivers" in the vehicles, which can hold up to six bags of groceries. The partnership is not exclusive and Nuro hopes to take on other companies as its clients.


David's departure. In the latest development in executive shakeups at British department stores, Harrods announced (paywall) that its chief merchant, Helen David, has left the store after working there for ten years. She had served as chief merchant since August 2016 and exited (paywall) "to pursue new venues." Her replacement has not yet been named.

Honoring Eleanor. British menswear designer Eleanor McDonald took the top prize at the International Talent Support (ITS) Awards in Trieste, Italy on Wednesday night. She will receive €15,000 in cash and a yearlong tutorship with Pitti Immagine. She also nabbed two other awards, the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana prize (€5,000) and the Tomorrow prize (a free showcase at the Tomorrow Paris Showroom), at the ceremony.

Silver anniversary. Dutch designers Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren of Viktor&Rolf are marking 25 years in business this year and a new coffee-table book celebrates their label and its history. The 520-page tome is called "Viktor&Rolf: Cover Cover"and will be released on July 6.
